Tell us about yourself and your business: For 10 years prior to starting my business I worked in my family business. I had responsibilities ranging from sales and marketing to finance and accounting to production and inventory. When I decided to start my own business I felt that I had a solid understanding of all aspects of running a business. On January 2, 2009 the Little Miss Julia website was launched and soon after distribution was expanded to retail stores. We offer a full range of stylized hair accessories for girls that are unique in style. It is not just another bow; it is an embellished, stylized accessory that will add style and glamour to any girl’s hair.
What inspired you to start a business? I believe a girl’s hair should always look pretty and for a long time I was unable to find nice hair accessories for my daughter in the stores. Because of that I started making barrettes for her. As she started wearing the barrettes, people asked where they could buy them. There was such a positive response I knew I could take something I enjoyed doing and turn it into a profitable business. As a result, Little Miss Julia was born.
Share one business goal: To increase retail distribution across the United States and Canada.
What would you say contributes to your success? I don’t let the grass grow under my feet. When I decide I want to do something I make it happen. This has helped me in that I got my business formed, website set up, suppliers established and developed relationships with the retail community within in a short amount of time. I am also a perfectionist. Some might argue that is not a good thing but I believe it has helped me to create a business and products that I am proud of and happy to say I make and sell.
What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? Believe in what you are doing, take advice from others and network. Most importantly, don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot accomplish your goal. Anything is possible with hard work and determination.
