Tell us about yourself and your business: I am a young entrepreneur with a newly started social media management company.  I majored in Entrepreneurship and Innovation for my Bachelor of Commerce degree and I am now studying for my MBA while running my own business.  I have always been passionate about entrepreneurship, running many small businesses throughout high school and university in order to save for tuition.  I’ve worked with many entrepreneurs to develop business plans, conduct market research and help brainstorm ideas to get their businesses off the ground and successful.  My business helps other businesses manage their social media.  We develop strategies, set up accounts and manage accounts by providing updates and search engine optimized keywords in order to reach their social media objectives.

What inspired you to start a business? Working with another start-up company previous to starting Miss Mediosa, my responsibilities were not only managing social media, but also managing phone calls, emails, resumes, sales calls, marketing, bookings, rentals, advertising, course development and attending trade shows.  I achieved great results in the social media department but wasn’t able to focus as much time as I would have preferred.  I was one of only two employees and had to divide my time among a number of responsibilities.  After a Christmas break trip home to eastern Canada to visit my family, I was inspired by both of my entrepreneurial parents to begin my own social media business.  This way, I could dedicate all of my time to social media and achieve great results for a number of businesses.  I’ve always been passionate about social media, researching all of the latest trends and networks, and finding new ways that these online communities could be used for business purposes.  With my love for entrepreneurship paired with my interest in social media, I’m so excited to work with companies across Canada and the US in order to help entrepreneurs achieve success through social media.

Share one business goal: To really achieve brand recognition and motivation for a struggling business.  Entrepreneurs can get so stressed, overwhelmed and helpless sometimes.  I’d love to be the company that turns it around for them.  I’d love to help them see how powerful social media can be for their business, and help them achieve the results that make them excited to get to work in the morning.

What would you say contributes to your success? My mom.  Growing up and watching my mom start her own successful business and live the exciting life of an entrepreneur, I’ve always known that I wanted to own my own business.  She’s always there for advice whenever I start to struggle with my own business, and experiencing her success first hand is great motivation for me to see what life could be like if I make this business succeed.  It shows me what could happen as long as I don’t give up.

What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? Carefully research the possibilities of your business idea – look closely at the competition and the industry, and then go for it.  Taking the first step is the hardest part.  Especially as a young person, it’s hard to know whether or not you’re making a huge mistake.  As long as you do the initial research and believe in yourself and your idea, anything is possible.  I once read a quote that “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can live the rest of your life like most people can’t.” I look at this quote every day and as long as you have the motivation and the drive, and you’re smart about your business decisions, it will be worth it.  Don’t give up, and don’t doubt yourself.

  • With the recent launch of our online shopping site, I made my prime focus the development of a strong social media presence. Initially, I was struggling with the terminology, strategies and different application each service offered, and how I could make these sites promote our brand and create a following. Kara has been a vital part of my knowledge base and is an expert I consult with regularly to ensure we’re moving in the right direction. Our understanding and growth in this new marketing realm is thanks to Kara. Her business is a great client and service for small and large businesses alike. Miss Mediosa is a great marketing asset for anyone who wants to grow their brand/business presence online.
