The Motivated Sista Circle is Back!

Our question for June: What Motivated You to Start on Your Current Career Path?

Anilia, Motivated Sista

Anilia is an entrepreneur and blogger, who writes about motivation, personal development and self-esteem.

My journey on this path grew from my t-shirt business, BlackGirl Tees. I kept reading that online businesses should implement blogs as a way to draw attention to the business and let customers get a feel for who the owners are. So I started the blog Black Femininity. While writing on issues affecting black women and girls, I constantly had to reign myself in from writing about more personal topics, such as goal-setting and personal development. I found it increasingly difficult to talk about the issues we face without going on these tangents.

One of my strongest traits is being a good listener and I honestly enjoy when friends and family ask me for advice (but I hate when people don’t listen, and then come back and tell you that you were right… but I digress…). I started to notice that I was answering the same questions over and over again, such as “how do I start this new goal, when my mother doesn’t approve?”, “where do you get your motivation from to do all the things you do?”, and “how can I get closer to completing my goals, when I feel so stuck?”.

So I felt that writing about personal development, self-esteem, goal setting and the law of attraction – topics I am more knowledgable about – would be a better tool for other women to use, instead of just limiting myself to news topics that affect black women and girls. I’ve been blogging at Motivated Sista for 10 months now, and feel that I definitely made the right decision. Now I’m ready to take my blog to the next level!

Patrenia, Personal Finance Notebook

Patrenia is an Accredited Financial Counselor and entrepreneur who writes about ideas, education and motivation for financial success at Personal Finance Notebook.

My current path is teaching and discussing the object that’s needed almost as much as oxygen – money. The motivation came from my own personal and work related experiences with money. See, I had no problem making money; keeping more of it was the issue. For my husband and I, maintaining a home and the needs of two growing kids became a roller coaster ride of a growing – declining – depleted savings fund. After many moments of frustration and realizing that we had it all wrong, we became students to learn how money should really be managed and successfully paid off about $93,000 in debt along the way. Being in the mortgage industry, I also noticed that many of my clients had the same money issues. So after recognizing that my clients, most of my friends and family and I had it all wrong…I became compelled to share this information. My hope is that many people will be intrigued with the information I share, seek knowledge and take action to transform their financial lives. I now know that it CAN be done!

CW, Black Women Deserve Better

CW’s blog “Black Women Deserve Better” was an exercise in truth, self-discovery and healing. It is her mission to help Black women get the love, respect and commitment they deserve.

Circa 2001 (Particularly after September 11th), I began deeply contemplating the direction in which my life was moving. Events such as these remind us that life is too short to waste on non-productive endeavors. It was as if myself, and nearly every Black woman who I encountered was on the same hamsterwheel. Stats such as age, height, weight, education level were not a mitigating factor in this phenomenon: On the job, the neighborhood, family, friends and friends of friends. Our stories were eerily similar. Being trapped (self-imposed or otherwise) in our routine…Or shall I say stagnation? Visiting the same hang-out spots, dating the same types of men and having the same conversations ABOUT those alleged men. This scenario played out time and time again over the years. At some point along the way, it was unfathomable that I was the only one sick and tired of being sick and tired. Without veering too far off topic, a number of Black women are familiar with being told:

  • How to feel
  • What their standards should be
  • What is “expected” of them

Topics which have been discussed ad-nauseum on the BWE (black women empowerment) blogs. I found it quite amusing that for all the things we ought to do, our situation overall wasn’t much improving. I observed an increase in OOW (out of wedlock) children, decrease in marriage, abdication of male responsibility, bashing of Black women and the haphazard “dating”. We are well aware of the negative behaviors which manifest as a result, but nonetheless, our children have suffered most. I want to give our daughters a fighting chance at living quality adult lives, with healthy relationships. This is one of the reasons I began “Black Women Deserve Better” three years ago. My book (by the same name) reveals the mind control and deceptions used (often by “our own”), to keep Sisters in their place. But my work doesn’t stop there. I periodically facilitate workshops and design courses to assist Black women in navigating the treacherous waters. In addition, one of the new hats I’m wearing is “Dating & Life Coach”. The goal is to uncover the real reasons why we often run into walls -and I have already ran into most of them a while back! My desire is for Black women not only to want change, but also to BE THAT CHANGE. Know that our daughters are counting on us!

Anilia’s note: please check out CW’s book, Black Women Deserve Better and her online workshop, Building Upon The Change.

Kim, Fit Sisters Boot Camp

Kim is a teacher by day and has her own fitness business where she helps women to get into the best shape of their lives.

I combined my love of teaching with my love of staying healthy to start my boot camp business. I believe that you must put your health first, because if you’re not healthy then your quality of life is at jeopardy. Staying healthy is a lifestyle — not a one-time act. Once you get into the groove of that lifestyle and start reaping the benefits, you will never go back. I love helping and showing people “the way” to a better quality and more fulfilling way of life by putting one’s self first.

Danielle, The Style and Beauty Doctor

Danielle is a stylist and makeup artist with a financial industry background. She is also president of Urban Glamour LLC, an image consulting company that offers personal styling, wedding, and makeup services. She also edits a fashion and beauty blog, The Style and Beauty Doctor.

My motivation came just when I was on line waiting for my college graduation to start. I was getting my BBA in Marketing and was kind of just standing there thinking about my future… when I overheard two girls saying they would take classes at The Fashion Institute of Technology. Who knew eavesdropping could take you on your path! I knew I always wanted to do something in fashion — in high school people would often ask me what to wear with what — I just never thought I could make a career out of it. Several months after graduation, I enrolled in the Image Consulting program and then completed the two year program. I’m so glad I made my decision. Never before have I felt so “myself” than when I can tell someone what looks great on their body type and/or skin tone. I love what I do!

Tamyka, TheCEOMamma

Tamyka is a wife, mother and entrepreneur. She’s the Founder/Owner of TheCEOMamma and teaches women entrepreneurs how to build a business on a budget.

There were a couple of things that motivated me to journey down my current career path. The first being that I was gifted with an entrepreneurial Spirit. I knew from a very young age I wasn’t cut out to work for someone else. I always had the drive and passion to “create my own”…whatever it may be!

The second motivational force is that I truly enjoy helping people. Not just in business, but however I can. I’ve always seemed to attract people who felt comfortable enough to share with me their deepest worries and concerns and I’d freely offer up support, encouragement and guidance.

Growing up, I was often misunderstood and my ideas often went unsupported, especially when I started my first business in Direct Sales (even by my own family). As an adult, things didn’t change much. I began to realize many entrepreneurs experience the same things and I wanted to be of help to those who needed it.

In my business, I share many resources and tips on building and marketing a business on a budget and have inspired many women in the process. I know this is the right path for me because I’m truly fulfilled in what I do! Give and it will come back to you, go measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over…is what I believe and live.

We would love for you to share what motivated YOU to start on your current career path! Visit Motivated Sista to leave your reply.

I recently connected with an inspiring women and motivational blogger named, Anilia. She happens to be one of the empowering women who’s words  inspire me and keep me focused on living my dream. Anilia blogs at Motivated Sista and I absolutely LOVE what she does.

Not to long ago, she contacted me about a project she was putting together. Anilia created the Motivated Sista Circle, which is made up of a group of women she feels inspire others to strive for success.

I am so honored and privileged to announce, I have been chosen as one of those women!

Once a month, we’ll post our thoughts on an intriguing question, and hope that our collective voices will motivate you to continue to reach your goals.

Our question for May: How Do You Define Success?

Anilia is an entrepreneur and blogger, who writes about motivation, personal development and self-esteem.

Anilia, Motivated Sista

My definition is balanced happiness. We’ve all heard of wealthy people who are miserable, and impoverished peopel living joy-filled lives. It may not be feasible for you to have your dream right now – whether it be your dream job, dream home or the relationship of your dreams. But if you have a plan to attain that dream, and you’re enjoying the journey to attain it – while managing discouragement that you’re not there yet – that is what I deem to be a success. Because joy in life doesn’t come just from the attainment of goals but also from the journey of reaching them.

Kim is a teacher by day and has her own fitness business where she helps women to get into the best shape of their lives.

Kim, Fit Sisters Boot Camp

Success is making things happen that you want to happen. It doesn’t matter what the size, big or small, a success is a success and deserves to be celebrated and acknowledged. Don’t discount small successes. Its the little ones’ that give us the confidence and motivation to try our hand at bigger goals. Make it a habit to record and acknowledge all the little successes and before you know it your bigger goals will be successful without very little effort and thought.

Danielle is a stylist and makeup artist with a financial industry background. She is also president of Urban Glamour LLC, an image consulting company that offers personal styling, wedding, and makeup services. She also edits a fashion and beauty blog, The Style and Beauty Doctor.

Danielle, The Style and Beauty Doctor

Success to me is being happy. Whether that means you’ve finally climbed the corporate ladder, or you’ve mastered being a mother, or you finally opened your own business, I believe you’re successful if whatever you do makes you leap out of bed in the morning because you can’t wait to get there.

It’s tough to be successful in your own right because from the time we enter the educational system, we’re bombarded with what everyone else deems is success. If I could go back and redo my undergraduate college experience, I would have opted to do more internships rather than work in Finance part-time. I was chasing the big salaried corporate jobs back then only to find out my heart is really in writing, fashion, and makeup…lol. I get disparaging comments (mostly from my mother) whenever I mention that once all my debts are paid, I’ll be transitioning from Finance to work full-time as a makeup artist and editor-in-chief of The Style and Beauty Doctor, but I’ve long ago learned not to let others define me.

Tamyka is a wife, mother and entrepreneur. She’s the Founder/Owner of TheCEOMamma and teach women entrepreneurs how to build a business on a budget.

Tamyka, TheCEOMamma

I believe that before you can truly be successful, you must first be able to define what exactly success means to you. Some people believe that obtaining wealth equals success or even reaching the top of the corporate ladder. Others feel success is determined by marital status and living the “American Dream”. Success to me is defined as being filled with joy and having inner peace. I believe that living my life the way I see fit, makes me successful. A quote by Christopher Morley sums it up best, “There is only one success – to be able to spend your life in your own way”.

CW’s blog “Black Women Deserve Better” was an exercise in truth, self-discovery and healing. It is her mission to help Black women get the love, respect and commitment they deserve.

CW, Black Women Deserve Better

I define success as FINALLY not being ashamed of my dreams, desires, nor of who I am. In the past, I tried to hide the bits and pieces of myself that others (especially men) would probably find objectionable. Knowing now that this, was the biggest LIE I ever told -The lie to yourself usually is! Success is being courageous enough to try new things, do what you like and tell others about it without fear of disapproval. Even in the midst of failure, one can be successful by walking away from a choice, relationship or lifestyle that isn’t working. Many would rather stubbornly “stick with” a bad idea for 20 years than admit it’s time for a CHANGE. Over the years, I’ve come to believe Einstein’s theory about insanity: Doing the same thing over & over again, expecting different results. This is another mountainous obstacle to achieving anything positive. When reading interviews of those who obtained success, we can expect to learn that they’ve failed a few times before “making it”. And most have no reservation in sharing that. Finally, success is realizing that you cannot control or CHANGE others, only oneself!

We would love for you to share YOUR definition of success! Visit Motivated Sista to leave your reply.

Since the explosive growth of social media over the years, many entrepreneurs have learned how to take advantage of using various free marketing platforms like Facebook and twitter, to make themselves increasingly visible online. Social media marketing is by far the easiest and cheapest way to establish your online presence. But let’s be real, some people are clearly way better at building there presence online than others.

You may be wondering if there is some sort of trick to this social media frenzy or an exact blueprint to follow that will guarantee success (I know I did when I first started…no such luck)!

During my many hours of research on social media marketing, I did however, learn a lot. I started reading the blogs of the people who seemed to have it all – a large blog readership, massive amounts of followers across their networks and lots and lots of references to their information being reposted and retweeted by others.

I subscribed to those that were interesting to me and who are in my industry. After a short time of following my new favorite bloggers, I began to feel connected to these individuals as if we knew each other in “real life”. I started feeling comfortable commenting on their blog posts and sharing my opinion with them, I even found myself sharing their links with my personal friends whom I thought would appreciate and get the same value from this great content I had discovered!

Then, low and behold…I had an ‘AHA’ moment!

My favorite bloggers built their presence online by simply possessing a deep passion for what they do. Each article, blog post, product or piece of advice they shared originated from an idea or talent they enjoy sharing with others. Simple..huh?

Do you know what else I realized? Their success didn’t happen over night either. They were consistently writing and sharing value with their followers day after day (and they shared that same valuable content even when they didn’t have any followers…imagine that!)

The key points I learned when I set my desires on building my business around my online presence…be passionate about what your doing, be willing to give 100% all of the time and practice discipline and consistency on a daily basis…even when you think nobody is watching!

Are you ready to build your powerful presence online?
Check out a few of my tips you can use to help you get started!

  • Determine your specialty. What are some of the things you are really good at? Think about the skill or training you received from a prior job or career. Where do your passions stem from? Ask yourself, “what value can I bring into the lives of others?” This is a really important factor when determining how you will build your presence online because this is the way you will develop your brand and what you will be known for online.
  • Who is your audience. So you’ve figured out your specialty and your passions. Now you’ve got to figure out who wants to be connected to you based on what you can offer. It may sound a little selfish but you’ve got to give before you can get! If your a financial advisor specializing in small business, your ideal audience would be small business owners and entrepreneurs. Cater to serving the audience who can most benefit from what you offer and make sure you can give them what THEY need.
  • Where is your audience. Before you can connect with them and invite them into your space, you have to find out where they hang out online. Yes, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are great places to expand your presence but they may not be the only places your audience chooses to congregate.
  • Introduce Yourself. Once you have determined your specialty, figured out who your audience is and where they are you can begin to introduce yourself to them (notice I said introduce yourself…NOT your business!!!) How do you introduce yourself? Simply by writing a brief yet compelling and descriptive bio of yourself and what you do. This way, you give people just enough information about you to help them determine if they’d like to connect with you.
  • Sharing value. The best way to build a solid foundation online is to of course…share your original quality content and handpicked resources. The best way to do this is to blog. Implementing the key factors mentioned above will come into play in your writing…be passionate about your topic, giving 100% all the time and being disciplined and consistent. These 3 factors alone will help you establish yourself online as the “real deal” and an expert in your industry.

Finally….don’t give up! If you are serious about not only creating your online presence but a community of loyal followers, you must be committed to making it work. Staying focused on your audience and keeping their needs in the forefront will assure you achieve the results you desire.

Stay tuned for my next post as I will share with you How to Create the Right Connections Online.

Guest Post By: Treshad Washington (My Son) In regards to Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day!

Hi my name is Tre and today I stayed home with my mom for take your kids to work day. Today I learned how my mom builds her business on facebook and twitter by making friends and talking to them. Every day she checks her stats on her blog and on hootsuite to find out how she gets traffic. She runs a Facebook fan page and shares inspirational quotes, blog post,  and other information. She talks on the phone with people who want to learn how to start a business, and it’s called coaching.

Today I learned to blog and post on the fan page and I learned how to network on twitter and facebook. I helped my mom get friends on facebook and twitter so she could get more people on her website.  I learned about her social network for other ladies in business. I learned how other women start their own business selling stuff online.

Now that I know what my mom does everyday, I think its cool to be a marketing consultant and coach. I think it is a tough job to keep up with and keeping track of what you are doing. I think you need a lot of time on your hands and patience.

Today I did a Facebook fan page quote that I found all by myself and somebody liked it, that made me feel special=[). If it was me doing all this marketing and networking I couldn't do it because you have to do a lot of typing  and thinking and talking to people. My mom has to talk to people on the phone and help them and teach them about  how to do their business. That's something I couldn't do because its scary to me.

In conclusion, I decided to never do marketing again because it was very hard, way to much work, and to much writing. Plus she made me write this blog post...just kidding!

Just the mere thought of Article Marketing can be overwhelming for some people, especially those who aren’t necessarily fond of writing. When I first decided to explore this method of marketing my business, I quickly found that it wasn’t as difficult a task as I orignially imagined. If your struggling to generate traffic to your blog or website you should consider, article marketing.

Like so many small business owners, most of my marketing efforts consists of various techniques of driving regular traffic to my blog. Many entrepreneurs choose article marketing as one of their ideal online activities because it’s free,  easy to get started and a great way to establish your presence online.

Submitting your articles to various article directories will not only help your sites traffic but can help you increase visibility because your submitted articles are available for republishing. When someone uses your article on their website or blog, it expands your network and exposes your bio and link included in your article, to more viewers.

If you are building a business online and your wondering how to get free traffic, generate business exposure and increase your online income, take a deeper look at article marketing. What better way to share original content within your niche market, on such a large scale to those eager to learn of what you offer?

If your interested in learning more about how article marketing can help you grow your business, Nicole Dean offers a free 5 day Easy Article Marketing eCourse designed to show you how it all works. Some of the things you’ll discover is how to write articles (even when you think you can’t write), how to write your authors bio for clicks and how to never run out of ideas! If you have been online for any length of time you’ve been exposed to a blog in one way or another. In fact you’re probably using one yourself and understand the importance of a small business utilizing a blog for several reasons such as increasing traffic, building a relationship with your readers, etc.

Not all people are as fortunate as those of us that know the importance of blogging. Speaking on a local level if you’ve ever had a conversation with a small business owner who has a brick and mortar business you have probably come to the conclusion that some of them don’t even know what a blog is!

That’s where a Virtual Assistant who loves WordPress, has a creative side and doesn’t mind working mostly behind the scenes, can utilize their services by becoming a blog consultant. Then you can start evangelizing to small business owners in your local community not only the importance of blogging but the truth – blogging is smart for business.

So exactly what is a blog consultant?

It’s someone passionate about blogging. They love blogging in general but more importantly they understand the importance of blogging for small business owners and want to share that understanding with small business owners especially on the local level.

So if you’re that VA mentioned above and are passionate about blogging and want to share that passion with others then be sure to check out Become A Blog Consultant. If you’re not a VA that’s ok too, this course was created for anyone who has a passion for blogging and wants to share it with local small business owners.

Be sure to check out this site where you can watch a quick two minute video and see a real life client example and sign up for a 16 minute audio that will help you decide if this is for you.

Blogging is an easy and creative way to help you generate exposure for your business. Not only is it a useful marketing tool to drive traffic to your website but it also provides a way for you to build a community of people to connect with. You can use a blog to share your business expertise and knowledge, keep customers updated on new products or services, and even communicate with your readers and request feedback.

How do you use a blog to generate exposure?

Think of it as being an informational portal to your business. You can create various pages on your blog including descriptions of products, services you offer, the latest news in your industry or current specials and promotions.

Providing a subscription option by email or RSS feed is a great way for readers to stay up-to-date with what’s going on. Having an RSS feed will also help you generate exposure because of the distribution throughout the many RSS directories.

You’ll also want to be sure you keep your blog fresh by writing new content regularly. Share links to your latest posts on your social network sites such as, Facebook and Twitter to encourage new readers.

Another great way to generate exposure is to interact with your readers. Ask questions and always respond to comments. Including guest posts and interviews also helps with audience participation and will increase your visibility in the blogosphere.

Blogging Tips for Beginners

Whether you are brand new to blogging or already have an existing blog online and you want to get targeted traffic, I suggest you have what I like to call, a Blogging Plan of Action. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, just a simple plan to help you focus on your specific blogging goals.

For instance, my Plan of Action for this blog simply states what my main blogging content is about, who my audience is (the people who are interested in reading my blog), how many times per week I will post and how I plan to “spread the word” when I have a new post to share.

Here are a few key tips to help you implement these strategies into your blogging.

Tip #1 – Determine your audience.
The best way to share your message is to determine before you start writing, who you will be speaking to. Take some time to think about what your goals are with your blog. Really consider who you are trying to reach and what you would like to convey to them.

Tip #2 – Clarify your content.
You have to decide what the overall topic flow of your blog will be. To attract regular readers, it’s important that your posts be consistent and relevant to assure your audience will stay interested in what you write.

Tip #3 – Write descriptive titles.
The title of your post will be the first thing people read. To capture interest, be sure your title is descriptive and gives your reader a clear understanding of what your post is about.

Tip #4 – Engage your followers.
The great thing about a blog is it allows you and your readers to interact with one another. It’s not difficult to motivate your audience to participation. Invite their involvement by asking questions and encourage feedback.

Tip #5 – Guest posts, interviews and comments.
Collaborating with other bloggers and individuals in your industry or niche is a great way to generate traffic to your blog. You can feature a guest post, interview an expert and connect with your readers by commenting on other blogs of interest to you. All of these activities can lead to targeted traffic.

Tip #6 – Spread the word.
Once you’ve written a new post on your blog, you need to spread the word. Share your link across your social network sites and on twitter. My two favorite tools I use to automate my latest blog posts are: HootSuite, and the Notes feature on Facebook. You can set these up to automatically grab your blog feed and post your newest content to twitter and your news stream (and your friends too) on Facebook. I also love the retweet button, if your readers enjoyed your post, they will share it with their friends!

Bottom line, to get targeted traffic to your blog – know your audience, post great content (consistently) and spread the word!
