Making Money from Your Blog through Affiliate Marketing

Most blog owners dream about how they can earn money from their blogs without having to sell their souls in the process.

You’ve spent a lot of time crafting fine blog posts; posting on social media and generally doing all you can to make sure that as many people read your really helpful blog content. Steadily, you’ve watched your blog traffic increase as more people discover your blog. Your readers begin to interact with you by leaving comments and sending you mails thanking you for one post or for a resource you’ve recommended.

Although you were satisfied with this level of interaction, after a while, you started wondering how to successfully make money from your blog without losing focus of why you started the blog.

Making Money from Your Blog

If you ask 10 successful bloggers how they make money from their blogs, you will probably get 10 different answers. There is really no good or bad way; it’s just that not every method is a good fit for you or for your blog.

One method that seems to be quite popular among some bloggers is product reviews. They receive free products in exchange for positive reviews. While this might be okay for some bloggers, you might not be particularly comfortable with this method of making money. And that’s fine.

And even if you’re okay with product reviews in theory, it might not be right for your blog especially if yours is a business blog.

So how can you make money from your blog without compromising your conscience or bringing down the value of your blog?

Two words: Affiliate marketing.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Simply, this is selling someone else’s product or service for a commission. Almost all pro bloggers incorporate some form of affiliate marketing or the other. At the very least, you’ll see some links to Amazon.com products; these are Amazon Associate links – the affiliate program for the Online store.

So, Why Affiliate Marketing?

Well, there are several reasons why you might want to consider affiliate marketing as your method of monetizing your blog.

1. You don’t have to create your own product. Some blog owners prefer to create their own information products and a lot of work goes into product creation but that’s a topic for a different blog post.

2. You have a choice on the products you want to promote and can pick products that compliment your niche. This is really important if you offer a service or a product for sale; you don’t want to promote a competing product or service, however you need to offer relevant value to your audience.

3. You make money on every person you recommend who makes a purchase. This is why affiliate marketing is often referred to as passive income because most times you place your affiliate link on your blog and go about doing your own thing while readers click on that link even when you’re asleep. However, it doesn’t always work that way. You need to put in some effort before your income from affiliate marketing becomes ‘passive.’

4. You add value to your readers. If you have a wedding blog for instance, you could promote a book on wedding flower designs. Most of your readers would be brides or those planning a wedding – at least that’s what we hope. When they come to read your tips, they might be interested in an eBook on wedding flowers.

Let’s narrow it down a little.

If your blog is about budget weddings, it is highly likely that your target audience would be interested in DIY wedding flowers.

Where to Find Products to Promote

Okay, so you’ve thought about affiliate marketing for your blog and you’re maybe thinking it might be a good fit. But how do you find products to promote on your blog?

There are several others but these are the more popular ones.

You did it! You have finally started your own business so you can work from home. You have received your start up materials, great tips to launch your new business from your sponsor and you are excited and ready to go!

You have a grand opening launch event and even made your first few sales…you are on a roll! You have big goals and an even bigger vision knowing you can expand your business by using the internet to market your business online.

So, you take all the training you’ve learned from your sponsor and company and use it online armed with your beautifully designed company replicated website. And then…

You Make the BIGGEST Direct Sales Mistake Most Representatives Make…

You start promoting the “H.E. double hockey sticks” out of your company products and business opportunity.

You post to your Facebook page (and every other social network you belong to) informing everyone you started a new business.

You also let everyone know you are in a “challenge” to do “( you fill in the blank) ” and have a goal to complete it by (date) and would like to know who wants to “help” you complete the challenge.

Or better yet, you want to share this month’s amazing ‘Special’ with all your friends and followers.

Does this sound like you? Are you wondering how in the world do I know all this? Well, it’s because that used to be me too. It took a rude awakening for me to finally realize what I was doing was not working at the capacity I had hoped. But, that’s a whole other story…(I share it in my free ebook here.)

Now, before you get all mad at me, I want you to understand that I’m not telling you NOT to promote your business online, what I want to share with you is that there is a much more effective way to go about it.

That way is to Brand & Market YOURSELF!

I want to give you a few tips to help you actually start to reap the reward of all your hard work and effort online. Before you apply these tips, I want you to grasp the fact that you are an INDEPENDENT business owners. You may promote someone else’s products but this business model requires you to build an independent business, aside from the company you represent.

With that being said, you have to learn how to brand yourself based on your skills and talents, to attract customers and clients who will in the end, benefit from the products you recommend. Trust me when I tell you, the harsh reality is…no one really cares that you are an XYZ Rep with such-and-such company.

Ask yourself a few questions: What makes YOU different than every other Representative of your company? Why should someone buy from YOU instead of another Representative? What will people learn about YOU when visiting your company website other than the products you sell?

If you are constantly offering the same promotions that everyone else is…what makes you unique? Nothing.

Tip # 1 – Consider your skills in relation to your business. More than likely you partnered with your company because you feel a connection to their mission and love the products and services they provide. So, if you are with a cosmetics company, what are you most passionate about that attracted you to the company? Do you value skin care? Have a love for color?

Take that passion and share it with others about skin care or color. Build Brand YOU.

Tip # 2 – Stop identifying yourself as a rep of your company. Shift your focus to marketing what you do for others instead of what you sell. Start introducing yourself to people as someone who can help them achieve a desired result. Whether that is to get clear skin, have a chemical free home, or lose weight naturally, you have to start letting people recognize you have the answers or solution to their problems.

Become a source of knowledge and information. Build Brand YOU.

Tip # 3 – Show prospects the benefit of working with you. If you are looking to build your team and leverage your earnings, help potential prospects see the value of partnering with you in business as opposed to starting a business with your company. Direct Sales is a people business and people do business with other people – ones they like, respect and trust.

Be willing to teach others how to do what you do. Build Brand YOU.

Tip #4 – Be consistent, passionate and committed. This is a big one. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your Direct Sales business. Work your business every day by setting attainable goals and building quality connections to start experiencing network marketing success. Be fully present by consistently building ONE business to the point you are making a steady and growing income…which is easily achievable by following tip # 3 – building a team and mentoring them along their journey.

Commit to your business growth and gain credibility online. Build Brand YOU.

Tip # 5 – Create your own platform to market yourself. Having a company website is great but before you send people there, build a relationship with them first. You can do this by building a blog for your business. As an independent business owner, you have to build a network of prospects on a regular basis, your blog is a way for you to 1) Build your brand 2) Share your expertise 3) Establish credibility in your industry, and 4) Create a network community of dedicated followers and loyal customers.

Set yourself apart to display your expertise. Build Brand YOU.

When you begin to learn how to brand and market yourself online by aligning your passion to serve others with the products and services you offer through your direct sales business, you will find this to be a more effective avenue of creating the kind of income you desire.

How Regular Follow Up Can Increase Your Sales & Repeat Business

When I first began marketing online, I had already heard the phrase, “The fortune is in the follow-up”, a billion times as a Network Marketer. I can admit, following up used to be a struggle for me, even in my direct sales business because I always felt like following up, meant I would be seen as a nuisance.

Since those early days, I’ve learned (the hard way), the value in staying in touch with prospects on a regular basis. I also realized that when my way of thinking changed toward the idea of reconnecting, my income began to grow.

The changing point for me came when a customer I finally called after months…boldly asked me, “why did it take so long for you to call me?” I had no answer other than I had been making excuses.

After I got off the phone, I really thought about what she said and made a decision right then and there, I would follow-up and follow-up until I was told outright – NO.

If following up has been a struggle for you OR something you’ve been avoiding in your business, here are a few reason WHY you need to adopt the habit immediately.

Understand, it’s not about you. Far to often as small business owners, we don’t always recognize that we have a fear of rejection. As if someone saying, no I’m not interested - means they are saying no to us personally, which is not the case.

We have to learn to take ourselves out of the situation and focus on meeting the needs of our prospect. No doesn’t necessarily mean Never, it simply means Not Right Now. Before you pick up the phone to call your prospect, take your personal feelings out of it…this is about business and having confidence that what you are offering is of value to them.

You show you care. No matter how you choose to reach out to your potential customers, it shows them you care enough to at the very least…check in with them. You never really know someone’s financial situation or what their circumstance may be.

When you look at it, as being all about timing, following up is just the logical thing to do. I’ve discovered that the more I follow-up with potential clients and business partners…the stronger the relationship becomes and the more trust is being built. When your prospects KNOW you are staying in touch because you genuinely care about making a difference in their life, when the time is right…they will buy.

You become trustworthy. I can’t count how many times my customers thanked me for “checking in” with them each month. In the world we live in today, people are always busy with their everyday life. No matter how many times your customer may say they will get back in touch with you, 9 times out of 10 they won’t.

More times than not, they aren’t being intentional when they don’t call you back. So, when you begin to follow-up with them regularly, they begin to expect it and eventually…they are ready to do business with you. Because you’ve demonstrated consistency in your efforts, your prospect sees you as a reliable business woman and be more likely to refer you to their friends!

The National Sales Association statics show:

2% of sales are made on the 1st contact
3% of sales are made on the 2nd contact
5% of sales are made on the 3rd contact
10% of sales are made on the 4th contact
80% of sales are made on the 5th-12th contact

Just imagine, if you Follow-Up 5-12 times, you increase your chances of closing the sale goes up 40 times!

So the next time you are tempted to NOT follow-up with your prospects, consider how it could negatively affect your reputation as an independent or small business owner or even give the impression of being unprofessional and uncaring.

Every day, more and more individuals have taken to the internet to start a business online. Even if you have very little money to begin with, you can still get started with little to no money at all. With a little creativity and determination, you can turn a passion into a profit.

Here are 5 Ways to Start Making Money Online

Affiliate Marketing is when you refer customers to a company or business and you earn a commission when the person you refer, purchases a product. This is an easy way to start making money online because there is usually no cost to get started with affiliate marketing.

You can begin immediately promoting products to your network circle and email contacts. Affiliate Marketing is not a way to get rich quick, you still have to operate with a strategy and a goal and consistently working, like a real business.

You have to be selective when it comes to choosing the products you will promote. You cannot simply pick products with a huge payout, instead, the products should be quality and be of interest and offer a benefit to your market.

Information Product is another way you could make money online. If you are able to teach others a step-by-step process to learning something new or can clearly explain ‘how-to’ reach a specific goal or resolve a particular problem, you could create an information product.

Wikipedia defines an Information Product as, ‘any final product in the form of information that a person needs to have.’

You could create an information product on nearly any topic of your choice and deliver it online in the form of a written ebook, article or tutorial, video, even audio.

The key to creating a great selling information product is to not only be knowledgeable about the topic, but also making sure there is a demand for the information in the first place.

Selling information online is a great way to create a product that you can profit from over and over again.

Offering Services and getting paid for your skills, knowledge and experience can generate a generous part-time or even full-time income from home.

Web and graphic designers, consultants, coaches, freelancers and other service professionals have learned to market themselves and display their skills to drum up business online. You can set your own prices, choose your own hours and design a business in your spare time that fits your lifestyle by simply tapping into what you already know.

Network Marketing is a way to start a home based or online business by partnering with a company, paying a start-up cost and becoming an independent representative marketing and selling products or services to earn commission and bonuses.

Companies like Mary Kay, Avon and Amway are all examples of a Network Marketing business. As an independent representative, you are responsible for building your customer base and sharing the companies products and services to earn an income.

These companies offer training and marketing material to help you with promotion and allow you to build a team of other independent representatives which provides additional income as they build their business as well.

It is important to do your research before you join any network marketing company. The Direct Selling Association is a great place to start as well as the Better Business Bureau. I started my first Network Marketing business in 2002, which gave me the flexibility to work around my family.

Selling Advertising on your website or blog could also be a helpful way to supplement your income considering of course you have a decent and steady flow of traffic.

Early on in my business (before I even thought about selling ad space), I got offers from other women entrepreneurs wanting to advertise right here on TheCEOMamma blog. I didn’t have high traffic but I did have a market that was of interest to others.

So even if you don’t have lots of traffic, you could still make some money providing ad space if you have great and targeted, regularly updated content.

These 5 ways are the same ways I use to earn money online. I am a firm believer in creating multiple streams of income as an entrepreneur and these are the easiest ways to get started quickly.

Though these methods may be easy to start and can create a nice extra income, you have to be willing to invest the time it will take to learn how to market effectively to make steady money.

Cash Flow Problems: How Two Types of Women Entrepreneurs React

Every female business owner has probably experienced it: just as her business is humming along, pulling in profits, picking up patrons, things slow down. Sometimes, they slow way down. For both the experienced entrepreneur and the fresh-faced business owner, it’s imperative that the cash flow slow down doesn’t come as a surprise, and that it’s handled with careful consideration.

A recent study from Jane Out of the Box, an authority on women entrepreneurs, revealed there are five distinct types of women in business. Each of these five types has unique approach to running a business—and as a consequence, each of them has a unique combination of characteristics and factors. This article profiles two of the Jane “types” and the different ways they may handle cash flow issues.

Jane Dough is an entrepreneur who enjoys running her business and makes good money. She is comfortable and determined in marketing and sales, which may be why she’s five times more likely than the average female business owner to hit the million dollar mark. Jane Dough is clear in her priorities and may be intentionally and actively growing an asset-based or legacy business. It is estimated that 18% of women fall in the category of Jane Dough.

Always the planner, Jane Dough may have predicted the cash flow decrease because she’s carefully watching her revenue streams and bottom line. Even if caught unaware by an unanticipated drop, she in objectively aware of business peaks and valleys and will have a plan in place for this eventuality.

Despite Jane Dough’s planning skills, she may benefit from pausing a moment to consider the following:

Examine the reason for the downturn, especially if it was unexpected. Jane Dough relies heavily on systems, delegating and trusting her team. She may, however, be moving at such a rapid pace toward her growth goals that she fails to recognize a flaw in her system that may be causing her to lose opportunity or may be contributing to a cash flow pinch. If Jane Dough experiences an unexplained decrease in cash flow, she should carefully examine the system and interview members of her team to ascertain whether there are systemic changes that would strengthen the business for the long term.
Check in with priorities before taking cash-producing action. Jane Dough is very clear in her priorities, whether it’s prioritizing her work and personal time, or prioritizing various aspects of her work life. In the face of declining cash flow, Jane Dough needs to examine those priorities and make sure she’s putting time and energy into the right areas. If she’s pouring resources into a product or service that isn’t paying off, she won’t have any trouble putting an end to it.
Look into the future. Sometimes Jane Dough’s in such a hurry to fix things right away that she doesn’t really see the potential payoff of waiting things out. This cash flow problem may be part of a normal economic cycle, and if Jane Dough reacts too fast by changing her product or downsizing her team, she may be sorry later. Sometimes it’s best to take the “slow and steady” approach, recognizing that patience now may pay dividends later.

Tenacity Jane is an entrepreneur with an undeniable passion for her business, but who is struggling with ongoing cash flow challenges. As a result, she’s working longer hours, and making less money than she’d like. Nevertheless, Tenacity Jane is bound and determined to make her business a success. At 31% of women in business, Tenacity Janes are the largest single Jane type.

Although cash flow issues are plaguing Tenacity Jane’s business, there are concrete steps she can take to turn the company financials in a positive direction:

Create a long-term plan and budget. In this plan and budget, Tenacity Jane should carefully consider what she can realistically sell, given the number of hours and available people to do the work. Often, Tenacity Jane struggles with cash flow because she is not charging enough for the products and services her company provides. Only a critical review of realistic revenues vs. associated costs will help her understand the viability of the business with its current pricing strategy.
Create daily, weekly, or monthly revenue goals to deliver against that plan. In order to turn the business around, Tenacity Jane can set clear goals for how much income she needs to create on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis in order to hit her goals. By staying focused on the immediate term needs, the task feels less daunting and more action-oriented.
Take action. There are two primary reasons businesses have cash flow problems – either the amount charged is insufficient to create enough profit OR the business does not have enough customers to keep it afloat. The two prior steps will help Tenacity Jane understand whether her business is struggling from the former, the latter, or both. Armed with this knowledge, she needs to take consistent action, each and every day, to close the gaps in pricing and/or increase the customer base. Along the way, it is important to recognize and reward yourself for every action you take – even if it doesn’t appear to be paying off immediately. Remember that Thomas Edison said, “Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.” Reward yourself for every drop of sweat – because that effort will undoubtedly payoff.

Although no business owner wants to have to deal with cash flow problems, every one does, at some point. Various entrepreneurs, like Jane Dough and Tenacity Jane, are likely to react in various ways, but each one can learn something from the others.

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

Many people are looking for a way to make money online today. The internet has opened up multiple opportunities to earn some extra income, and affiliate marketing is one of the simplest and low-cost ways for beginners to get started.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

First things first. Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting other’s products, and earning a commission on any sales that are made.

Choose a Market

The first thing you should do is choose a market – a group of people that you want to promote products to. A market could consist of scrapbookers, golfers, homeschoolers, etc. It is a group of people who share a common interest.

Make sure the market you are considering is one that is willing and able to spend money on their interest. College students have many interests, but most of them have no money, so that doesn’t make a good market. On the other hand, golfers spend tons of money each year on their sport. So choose wisely.

Choose Products

Once the market is chosen, it’s time to choose products. What kinds of things does your market need and want? What challenges do they have and what could you offer that would help them overcome their challenges?

Sticking with the golfers example, they may want to know how to improve their golf swing or they may want to wear more comfortable shoes. Whatever it is – find out what they need, and locate a product that fills the need. Sign up for the product owner’s affiliate program. You will be given a unique affiliate link that you can then use to promote the product. The link will track where the customer came from and give you credit when a sale is made.

Market!

Now it’s time to promote the product via a website or blog, in emails, by social networking, etc. You will need to set aside every week to market your products.

Here’s a tip: Start an email list. Send the potential customer to a page where you ask for their email address so you can keep in touch with them. Don’t just send them to the affiliate site right off the bat or you will lose contact with them. Many people don’t buy the first time they see a product, so by getting their contact information, you can continue to market to them.

You must have a desire to build a profitable business. Here are 7 tips to help you see results in your network marketing business.

Be a Product of Your Product – As women, we rarely have a hard time telling a girlfriend about a new restaurant we’ve tried, a new shoe store we’ve discovered and how much we enjoyed a particular movie. When you have firsthand experience with your products or service, it makes it that much easier for you to share honestly, the benefits with others. You will be better able to explain how it works, how to use it and what results can be expected. This helps assure your customers you are knowledgeable and displays professionalism.
Treat Your Business Like a Business – Most people fail in their network marketing business because quite frankly, they don’t treat it like a business. Do not mistake the idea of being your own boss as being able to establish a lucrative income from home working only one day a week. Your business is NOT a hobby and you need to commit to building it in order for it to grow. It takes a great amount of time and dedication early on to reach a sustainable and consistent profit.
Take Advantage of Training and Education – If your company offers training meetings, seminars, conferences, etc., it is in your best interest to attend. These are designed to help you learn more product knowledge, marketing skills and sales techniques that allow you to better serve your customers and run your business.
Learn to Set Goals – In order to be successful and achieve the things you want, you have to plan your success. Take time each week and month to write down your sales goals, team building goals, etc. and create your plan to make it happen. If you want to see results, you have to know what action steps you need to reach it.
Create a Working List – This is a very vital part of growing your business. In network marketing, you start with a list of people you know. As time goes on, that list should grow from referrals and new people you meet. Network marketing is a people business so if you don’t want to fail, you must have a list to work from and be willing to contact a minimum of 5 people a day about your business.
Growing Your Team – Most network marketing companies offer you extra bonus commissions when you bring other people in to the business. To earn a continuously growing commission early on, establishing a team to leverage your time will give you just that, while providing you extra income. Be open to utilizing every aspect of your companies pay structure to make the most amount of money.
Follow Up is a MUST – In this industry, following up is imperative in every area of your business. If you hold a presentation and everyone doesn’t buy that night, you follow up for a sale later. When you interview someone about partnering with you in the business and you don’t get an immediate yes, you follow up until you get a definite – NO. When talking to women, I find that many don’t want to seem annoying or as if they are bothering anyone. Being in network marketing for nearly 10 years, I find that people appreciate the follow up because 9 times out of 10, they are interested but for some personal reason, they don’t have the means at THAT time. This is YOUR BUSINESS…you stop following up when they say NO, I’m NOT interested.
